John writes simply and powerfully: “We love because he first loved us” (1 John 4:19). Love does not begin with our effort or our feelings. It begins with God.
God showed His love most clearly when He sent His only Son into the world, so that we might live through Him (1 John 4:9). He loved us not because we were lovable, but because love is who He is.
This changes how we love others. When we feel empty, we do not try harder to produce love on our own. We come back to the cross and receive again what God has already given. A heart filled with His love will overflow toward family, neighbors, and even strangers.
John also reminds us that “perfect love casts out fear” (1 John 4:18). We do not need to earn God’s approval or fear His rejection. In Christ we are fully known and fully loved.
This week, think of one person who needs to experience God’s love, and show it in a simple, practical way.
