On the night before the cross, Jesus gave His disciples a picture they would never forget: “I am the vine; you are the branches” (John 15:5). A branch does not strain to produce fruit. It simply stays connected to the vine.
Jesus invites us to the same kind of life: “As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love” (John 15:9). To abide means to remain, to make our home in Him. We do this by staying in His Word, talking with Him in prayer, and walking in obedience.
Apart from Him we can do nothing that lasts. But connected to Him, our lives bear fruit: love, joy, peace, and lives that point others to Christ.
Abiding also shapes our community. Jesus says, “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you” (John 15:12). As a church family, we grow together when each of us stays close to the Vine.
This week, choose one daily habit that helps you abide, such as reading one chapter of John each morning.
